Unveiling Water World Ocean Park: Asia’s Premier Seaside Water Park

Asia’s Premier All-Weather Water Park: Water World Ocean Park

Asia’s First All-Weather, Year-Round Seaside Water Park

Perched in the hills and overlooking the sea, the term “Ocean Park” brings joy and nostalgia to the people of Hong Kong. Since its inception in 1977, this theme park has become an integral part of local culture and a popular destination for tourists from the region. It previously featured a modest outdoor water park, which was only operational for around 100 days each year before its closure in 1999.

The fond memories of cooling off at a water park during the summer have never truly faded. In September 2021, a new and eagerly awaited version opened its doors, much to the delight of this vibrant city known as “Asia’s World City.” The revamped Water World Ocean Park is now twice the size of its predecessor, boasting both outdoor and indoor spaces, making it a year-round attraction. With the launch of the first Fullerton resort globally, Ocean Park is now striving to establish itself as an international destination.

While WhiteWater supplied the water slides and aquatic play equipment for the park, they collaborated closely with Water Technology, Inc., which was responsible for the technical master planning and aquatic engineering design, including the creation of ten bodies of water on this terraced site.

Unique Landscape, Unique Challenges

The location of Ocean Park beautifully combines the mountains and the sea. However, this stunning landscape also posed significant challenges. WhiteWater’s expert team of slide designers and structural engineers worked diligently to utilise the slopes effectively, strategically placing four water slide complexes throughout Water World Ocean Park while minimising disruption to the natural environment.

The four slide complexes are situated at various elevations on the mountain, designed to start and finish on different platforms and heights. Whether viewed from afar or experienced up close, visitors can appreciate the dramatic visual impact of the water slides. The unique aesthetics not only enhance the ride experience but also create excitement as guests slide amidst lush hills with breathtaking views of the endless sea. The seamless integration of the water slides into the hillside is impressive, but it involved overcoming numerous engineering challenges, including managing steep gradients and ensuring resilience against the intense typhoons that frequently affect South China.

Overall, the combination of the challenging terrain, high environmental standards, and drainage requirements makes the successful completion of this project a remarkable engineering achievement.

Rich Experience in Tight Footprint

The limited space available for Water World Ocean Park does not compromise the variety of rides, ensuring a rich experience for guests of all ages. Each slide has been meticulously designed to take full advantage of the natural topography.

“Thunder Loop”, “Daredevil Drop” & “Bravery Cliffs” – Flatline Loop, AquaDrop & Freefall

This exhilarating water slide complex features three high-speed attractions. Flatline Loop (“Thunder Loop”) and AquaDrop (“Daredevil Drop”) both commence from an AquaLaunch capsule. The Flatline Loop propels riders through a thrilling 360-degree tube, while AquaDrop offers a heart-stopping plunge straight down. Freefall (“Bravery Cliffs”) is equally thrilling, dropping riders directly from an open flume with stunning views of the sea.

“Cyclone Spin”, “Tropical Twist” – Giant AquaTube

Riders in 1-2 person inner tubes twist and turn down these twin Giant AquaTubes, known as “Cyclone Spin” and “Tropical Twist.” One tube is dark, while the other is translucent, providing two distinct and exciting experiences.

“Rainbow Rush” – Whizzard Twist

Before the original water park closed in 1999, one of its most iconic attractions was a five-lane racer called “Rainbow Slides.” The new version, a Whizzard Twist named “Rainbow Rush,” pays tribute to the original while being bigger and better, featuring three additional lanes. Eight competitors race head-first on mats through dark, twisting tubes before emerging into the open and plunging down to see who crosses the finish line first.

“Skyhigh Falls” – Boomerango Squeeze

Having been a staple for two decades, Boomerango, with its iconic wall, is a must-have for many water parks worldwide. Here at Water World Ocean Park, a new version of Boomerango makes its debut—Boomerango Squeeze.

While the Boomerango wall typically serves as the main feature of a ride, Boomerango Squeeze allows for flexibility in height due to its tapered slide path after descending from the wall. This design is essential for adapting to Ocean Park’s landscape and enables the construction of this feature upstream, followed by other elements. In this case, the slide, named “Skyhigh Falls,” continues the thrill with high-banking turns down two massive coiling Constrictors, one of which features a jagged top, creating the sensation of travelling through a spinning sawblade.

“Whiskers’ Splash” – AquaPlay 1050

Themed with adorable animal mascots, a custom AquaPlay 1050 named “Whiskers’ Splash” offers multi-level aquatic fun for children, featuring interactive water play elements, jets, four slides, and a giant tipping bucket. With an instantaneous capacity of 246, this attraction is vital for parks with limited space.

A New Chapter for Ocean Park

Water World Ocean Park has set new standards in a state-of-the-art water park. We are proud to have built a world-renowned water park that integrates Hong Kong’s stunning natural topography, designed to provide the most unique guest experience for adventurers.” – Willie Choy, Head of Design and Engineering, Ocean Park Corporation
