Therme Group Chooses Washington, DC for New Wellness Resort
Therme Group has chosen a location in Washington, DC for its inaugural wellness and water park resort in the United States.
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced that Poplar Point, a 110-acre tract on the east bank of the Anacostia River, will host this new health and wellbeing destination.
“We know that Therme DC is a great fit for Poplar Point,” stated Bowser.
The initiative is expected to create jobs and “serve as a catalyst for economic growth along the Anacostia waterfront,” she added.
Therme DC to be built at Poplar Point
Therme Group intends to develop 15 of the 110 acres at Poplar Point into a distinctive attraction featuring thermal baths, numerous saunas and wet rooms, thermal and mineral pools, waterslides, relaxation beds, immersive art, and a selection of restaurants.
“Therme DC will be a transformative addition to the city’s landscape and will set a new standard for how cities can integrate wellbeing into the fabric of urban downtowns, providing access to green spaces, wellness, and community-driven programming for both residents and visitors,” remarked Robert Hammond, president of Therme Group US.
Robert Hanea, chairman and CEO of Therme Group, expressed: “By merging cutting-edge technology with our dedication to sustainability and holistic wellbeing, we are establishing a new benchmark for how cities can incorporate wellness into daily life.”
Poplar Point has remained undeveloped for decades, but with the arrival of Therme DC, the site will feature a 70-acre riverfront park and 23 acres designated for mixed-use development.
John Alschuler, chair of Therme Group US, stated: “From the outset, our aim has been to create a unique, community-focused destination in our nation’s capital.”
The new DC resort will “enhance access to wellbeing, expand public green space, and invest in a historically underserved neighbourhood,” he noted.
It is projected to generate $1.5 billion in tax revenue over 25 years, create 5,000 local construction jobs during development, and provide 720 permanent jobs upon completion.
Poplar Point is currently federally operated land, with Washington, DC now working to transfer it to city control.
Last month, Therme Group unveiled plans for 10 wellness resorts in the US over the next decade.
