Revamping Zoo Revenue with Serengeti Springs

When the Hattiesburg Convention Commission assumed control of the Hattiesburg Zoo from the city in 2010, the team recognised the importance of transitioning the zoo away from subsidies and towards self-sustainability. By implementing cost-saving measures and expanding their reach to a broader demographic, the zoo achieved profitability for the first time in 2017.

The Hattiesburg Zoo, known for its conservation efforts and community outreach programmes, sought to establish a robust revenue stream to support these initiatives. Identifying the popularity of the existing splash pad, the team conceptualised a new water park, Serengeti Springs, as a strategic approach to not only increase revenue but also enhance visitor experience, cater to a wider audience, and boost the city’s tourism sector.

Thus, the innovative concept of Serengeti Springs was born.

The First of Two Phases for the Water Park

Located within the Africa section of the Hattiesburg Zoo, Serengeti Springs was designed to be developed in two distinct phases. In 2024, the initial phase, costing $10.5 million, was unveiled, featuring a FusionFortress 10 named “TreeTop Trek.” This expansive aquatic play structure spans 17,000 square feet (1,580 square meters), offering a plethora of entertainment with 9 slides and 280 features, ensuring a delightful experience for families. To cater to adult visitors, a 436-foot (133-meter) lazy river, connected to a swim-up bar and holding 150,000 gallons (567,000 litres) of water, was added.

With its array of attractions, picturesque landscaping, and comprehensive amenities, Serengeti Springs has swiftly become a sought-after summer destination in southern Mississippi.

Anticipating the second phase of the water park in the near future, the introduction of FusionFortress 10, a self-contained water park, perfectly complements the offerings of the initial phase. This unique attraction caters to a diverse audience, setting the stage for future expansions.

  • Slides designed for young children
  • Slides suitable for older children and adults
  • Interactive play elements
  • Capacity to accommodate a large number of visitors
  • Encourages free and unstructured play
  • Compact footprint with high entertainment value

Notably, this installation marks the debut of FusionFortress 10 in the Americas.

One-of-a-Kind Animal Theming

Upon approaching the FusionFortress, guests are captivated by the intricate animal-themed decor that immerses them in the Serengeti experience. From lifelike animal sculptures to vibrant 2D reliefs, the attention to detail is evident. The play structure features a variety of creatures, including parrots in flight, prowling tigers, grazing zebras, curious lemurs, resting jaguars, and more, all contributing to a visually engaging environment.

The thematic elements extend to the park’s design, incorporating Swahili phrases like “Jambo” and “Habari” for an authentic African touch. Even the sunshade sails and guardrails are adorned with safari-inspired prints, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal and providing a picturesque backdrop for visitors.

Slide and Play for Everyone

With a diverse range of features and activities to explore, guests are treated to an immersive “TreeTop Trek” experience. The play structure offers interactive elements such as water guns, jets, and ropes, ensuring engaging discoveries for all. The highlight of the park includes two tipping buckets, releasing 1,800 and 3,000 litres of water respectively, creating thrilling splash zones and expanding the play area.

Featuring nine body slides catering to various age groups, including the exhilarating “Serengeti Swirl” and other AquaTube and Pool Slider options, the water park guarantees an exciting adventure for all visitors. Additionally, the FusionFortress has a high capacity, accommodating up to 1,270 individuals, and is complemented by 18 AquaSplash Toys and Life Floor safety tiles, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for guests.

The thematic elements extend to the Life Floor, with colour-coded zones enhancing the play area’s visual appeal and facilitating easy navigation for visitors.

Easter Eggs

To enhance guest engagement and encourage repeat visits, Serengeti Springs features hidden surprises, or “Easter Eggs,” for visitors to discover. From geckos camouflaged in the guardrail panels to animal footprints on the Life Floor, these subtle touches add an element of fun and discovery to the overall experience.

A Resounding Success for the Beloved Zoo

With season passes selling out within a fortnight of the park’s opening, Serengeti Springs has swiftly become a crowd favourite, showcasing the potential of zoos to generate revenue through innovative ventures. The water park is projected to inject approximately $12 million into Hattiesburg’s economy, attracting a higher footfall and contributing to wildlife conservation efforts. By enjoying the attractions at Serengeti Springs, visitors unknowingly contribute to the preservation of wildlife and the sustainability of the zoo.

Testimonials from visitors and officials alike reflect the overwhelming success and positive reception of Serengeti Springs, highlighting the seamless integration of the water park with the zoo’s existing offerings.
