PortAventura’s Approach to Sustainability Engagement with Visitors and Suppliers

PortAventura’s Approach to Sustainability Engagement

Join Choni Fernández, the customer, sustainability, and communications director at PortAventura World, at greenloop 2025 on 13 May at 11.30 am BST.

PortAventura World was the world’s first carbon-neutral theme park, and in 2024, it became the first theme park company to achieve B Corp Certification. As a pioneer in sustainability within the theme park sector, Fernández will provide updates on PortAventura’s latest strategies and initiatives.

Communicating climate action to visitors presents a delicate balancing act for theme parks. How can we discuss the climate emergency while ensuring our visitors enjoy their experience? Additionally, collaborating with suppliers to promote greener practices can also pose challenges.

Fernández will share insights on how PortAventura has fostered effective dialogue with stakeholders to enhance sustainability engagement with both visitors and suppliers. Join us to learn from an industry leader!

PortAventura: Leading the Way Through Dialogue

Fernández holds a Diploma in Business and a degree in Economics. After spending 12 years at the multinational BASF, where she held various roles related to logistics and supply chain, she joined PortAventura World in 2007.

She has been leading operational areas such as Procurement and Logistics for 15 years. Since 2008, she has developed and implemented the company’s sustainability strategy, and in 2023, she transitioned from operational to commercial roles, now leading a newly established Customer department to guide PortAventura World towards becoming a more customer-centric organisation aligned with its purpose-driven mission. A significant milestone has been steering the company to achieve B Corp Certification.

As chief sustainability officer, she reports directly to the CEO and participates in the Board of Directors. Additionally, she serves as the delegate for Catalonia at DIRSE, the Spanish Association of Sustainability Directors, and is the Chair of the IAAPA EMEA Sustainability Committee.

“We view sustainability as a core pillar of our business, inherently embedded in who we are. Our goal is to remain a leading vacation resort by reducing our carbon footprint, protecting our environment, and ensuring and facilitating access to leisure for those who need it most.”
