Ontario Place Redevelopment: Final Designs Unveiled for Therme Canada

Exciting Developments in the Ontario Place Redevelopment

The Ontario government has revealed the final designs for the Ontario Place redevelopment, which features a new Therme wellbeing resort.

According to a press release, the transformed Ontario Place will provide over 50 acres of public trails, enhanced green spaces, playgrounds, interactive fountains, new beaches, event spaces, and an upgraded marina.

Additional attractions will encompass the Ontario Science Centre and the Therme Canada water park, along with a wellness destination.

Ontario Place is anticipated to attract up to six million visitors annually, generating 5,000 jobs in the construction and tourism sectors, thereby boosting the economy across Toronto and the surrounding region.

“Therme Canada is thrilled to contribute to the reimagining of Ontario Place,” stated Adam Vaughan, senior advisor of Therme Canada.

“Today’s announcement marks another significant step in revitalising this remarkable waterfront destination. The parkland announced by the province, combined with the new beach and parks that Therme is developing on the West Island, will create a vast new waterfront public space for Ontarians to enjoy.”

The final designs for the Ontario Place redevelopment, shaped by consultations with First Nations and Indigenous groups, were crafted by the design firm LANDInc.

Ontario Place first opened its doors to the public in 1971. Once the reimagining is complete, it will stand as one of the largest public parks in downtown Toronto.

In October, the Ontario government published its lease agreement with Therme Canada, following the dismissal of two legal challenges to the plans for Therme Canada by Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice.

Critics of the project have voiced concerns that it could jeopardise the site’s wildlife habitats and vegetation.

As part of the lease agreement, Therme Canada will invest $700 million to develop its new destination on Toronto’s waterfront. Of this amount, $500 million will be allocated to constructing the Therme facility itself, while the remaining $200 million will be dedicated to approximately 16 acres of public park space, shoreline protection, trails, parkland, gardens, and a new beach.
