Liseberg Files Lawsuit Against Trygg-Hansa for Oceana Fire Insurance Denial

Liseberg Takes Legal Action Over Oceana Fire Insurance Dispute

Liseberg has commenced legal action against the insurance provider Trygg-Hansa, which has refused to provide compensation following the Oceana fire insurance lawsuit related to the fire at the Oceana water park on 12 February 2024. Trygg-Hansa contends that the Swedish amusement park lacks an insurable interest in Oceana. Liseberg’s claim totals just over 1 billion Swedish kronor (approximately €92 million).

The fire at the Oceana site resulted in considerable property damage just prior to the water park’s opening. Liseberg estimates that the costs for demolition, decontamination, and restoration will exceed a billion Swedish kronor. The construction was insured with Trygg-Hansa, which included all-risk coverage. Following the fire, Liseberg sought compensation for rebuilding expenses, but on 30 June 2025, Trygg-Hansa declared that the claim had been denied.

Trygg-Hansa defended its decision by asserting that Liseberg did not incur any compensable damage and lacks an insurable interest in the affected property.

“We see no other way forward than to file a lawsuit”

“Liseberg secured project insurance with Trygg-Hansa to obtain financial protection against risks associated with the construction project,” states Andreas Andersen, CEO of Liseberg.

“The insurance was intended to cover the fact that this is a large and costly construction project involving multiple contractors working for Liseberg. It is perplexing that Trygg-Hansa is attempting to evade responsibility by claiming that Liseberg has not suffered any damage.”

Trygg-Hansa maintains that Liseberg did not act negligently regarding the fire in a manner that would exclude insurance coverage. Instead, it argues that Liseberg is ineligible for compensation because two of its contractors caused the fire through gross negligence.

“It is unreasonable for Liseberg to be denied insurance compensation simply because the insurance company believes that parties other than Liseberg have been negligent. Therefore, we see no alternative but to file a lawsuit and have Liseberg’s right to insurance compensation adjudicated by the court,” adds Andersen.

Liseberg has filed a lawsuit against Trygg-Hansa in Stockholm District Court, seeking 1.02 billion SEK for fire damage, along with interest and legal fees.

The fire devastated the new water park’s outdoor slides and other facilities that were under construction. Tragically, one person lost their life and 16 others sustained injuries. In December 2024, Liseberg unveiled a new design for the water park. The decision to rebuild was made after Liseberg cleared the site and conducted thorough investigations.
