Innovative Water Feature at Riyadh’s Aarid Project

Innovative Water Feature Design at The Aarid Project in Riyadh

Cloward H2O, an expert in aquatic design, collaborated with Cass Calder Architecture and EDSA to create a distinctive water feature design for The Aarid project in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This expansive development, covering 3.3 hectares, integrates residential, commercial, educational, medical, and recreational spaces into a vibrant lifestyle hub.

The centrepiece of this large-scale initiative is a captivating water element that has been meticulously crafted to enhance the overall comfort and aesthetic appeal of the development. Spanning over 18,000 square feet, it serves as the highlight of the retail complex. Drawing inspiration from intricate canals, it features impressive two-story waterfalls at the entrance, 30-foot cascading water towers, a 6-foot diameter acrylic sphere, and unique seating oases within the water, all contributing to a serene atmosphere for visitors.

Cloward H2O, Cass Calder Architecture, and EDSA have successfully designed this striking water element. This collaborative effort not only adds elegance but also helps alleviate the region’s hot and arid climate, as the water feature design naturally cools the surrounding area.

Nonetheless, introducing such a substantial water feature in this dry environment presents challenges, with water conservation being the primary concern. The project team embarked on an ambitious journey to strike a harmonious balance between luxury and sustainability, recognising the necessity for responsible water management.

A Sustainable Approach

The water element of The Aarid project exemplifies how design and engineering can yield environmentally friendly solutions. The waterfalls create a soothing ambiance and humidify the air, reducing the reliance on energy-intensive air conditioning, while the water towers disperse fine mists that cool the air and counteract harsh weather conditions.

Cloward H2O employed innovative strategies to address the issue of water conservation. To minimise waste and optimise the use of water resources, a well-designed water recycling system collects and filters runoff and excess water. Efficient water circulation and conservation are ensured through modern, energy-efficient pumps and filtration systems.

Additionally, water usage is curtailed by incorporating native, drought-resistant plant species in the landscaping, aligning with sustainability goals. The implementation of rainwater harvesting systems guarantees that every drop is utilised for the benefit of the entire development, further bolstering conservation efforts.

Engineering Solutions

The water feature design showcases Cloward H2O’s meticulous engineering approach. With a water capacity of approximately 900 cubic meters, the canal is designed to uphold high standards of water quality suitable for recreational activities.

The system’s strategically placed surface returns and drains facilitate circulation and the removal of waste and pollutants. High-quality pumps, particularly Herborner Vertical pumps (Series X), equipped with variable frequency drives (VFDs) and high-efficiency motors, minimise the space required for mechanical equipment while maximising operational power needs.

This detailed design ensures that the aquatic features meet aesthetic objectives while adhering to stringent public health regulations.

The Design Vision

EDSA introduced an innovative design perspective to the Aarid project. The firm crafted a vibrant mixed-use development that merges various areas into a cohesive destination for lifestyles. Alongside extensive ground-level landscaping for a modern look, the project features numerous pathways, bridges, and plazas that blend with the naturally occurring wadi edge conditions. The water feature design is surrounded by a sculptural plaza, a lush wooded canopy, a rock garden, and retail and recreational options.

Upon completion, the development will encompass a family entertainment facility, main street anchors, restaurants, smaller retail outlets, and kiosks. EDSA’s master planning and detailed design address vehicle and pedestrian streetscape corridors, entry gateways, inner courtyards, and garden areas, creating an engaging environment for all.

The Aarid project illustrates how creative minds can collaborate to tackle environmental challenges while crafting attractive and functional spaces. Cloward H2O, Cass Calder Architecture, and EDSA have developed a water element that transcends mere aesthetics. This feature addresses climate mitigation and water conservation in a hot and arid climate, exemplifying responsible design and engineering. It highlights the potential for beauty and sustainability to coexist even in the harshest conditions.
